Hal Janes was born in the province of New Brunswick in April 1954. He received a B.Sc.Eng. and M.Sc.Eng. from the University of New Brunswick in 1977 and 1985 respectively.

Hal articled to R.W. Leeman, ALS from 1995-1999. He received his commission as an Alberta Land Surveyor on April 13, 1999. The topic of the technical report submitted as part of the qualifying examination was "Report of the Study Group on the Coordinate Based Cadastre."

Hal was a member of the ALSA Standards Committee and chaired the Study Group on the Coordinate Based Cadastre.

Hal served on the ACLS Council from 2001-2003, president of ACLS in 2004 and past president in 2005.

He has been employed with Usher Canada Limited since 1986.

Hobbies include woodworking, hiking and camping.
