Jan Daniel TerHart was born in Haarlem Netherlands in 1927. He graduated from high school in Amsterdam in 1945 and then attended nautical college. He then became an officer in the merchant navy.

On February 7, 1961, he became registered as an Alberta Land Surveyor although he never practiced in Alberta.

He was a Saskatchewan Land Surveyor and worked for Underwood McLellan and Associates and Kent Phillips and Associates from 1956 to 1958 before establishing his own firm, TerHart Surveying Services Ltd in Estevan, Saskatchewan from 1958 to 1984 where he did oilfield and legal surveys.

In 1984, he moved to Victoria, British Columbia.
