Jim Berry graduated from SAIT in 1973 with a diploma in Survey Technology. Later that year, he began his articles under Don Sandham at Midwest Surveys.

On June 29, 1978, Jim Berry was commissioned as Alberta Land Surveyor #450.

He left Midwest Surveys in 1985 and worked for Emmerson & Associates Surveys on a part-time basis before returning to Midwest Surveys in 1993. He remained with Midwest Surveys until 2008.

His experience was mostly in oil and gas surveys but did some land development. Much of the period from January 1974 to February 1989 was spent north of Edmonton working in bush and unsurveyed territory.

During his career, he articled Real Comeau and Sachin Mahendru.
