John West was born in Moncton, New Brunswick in September 1952, graduated from Riverview High School in 1970 and from the University of New Brunswick with a BSc in Engineering in 1976.

Upon graduation, John West moved west joining McElhanney in Calgary and articled to Con Zarowny until he received his commission as an Alberta Land Surveyor on June 10, 1982. Mr. West worked overseas with Western Geophysical from 1983 to 1985 before going to work for UMA (1985-1992), Can-Am (1993-1997) and Caltech (1997-2002).

John was active in the Alberta Land Surveyors’ Association, volunteering for the Convention & Social Committee and chairing the Standards Committee.

During his career, he articled future Alberta Land Surveyors David Thomas and Jeff Gibson.

In 2002, John West left the land surveying profession and purchased a vineyard in Oliver, British Columbia.

John was known for his large moustache and enjoyed running, travelling and woodworking.
