Activities

The mission of the Alberta Geomatics Historical Society is to collect and preserve the history of land surveying in Alberta and to share the history in ways that stimulate and educate. To fulfill this mission, the Society engages in the following activities:

  1. The society collects and preserves artifacts related to land surveying in Alberta. These artifacts serve as tangible evidence of the role of land surveys in the province’s social and economic development. The society utilizes these artifacts in various ways:
    • Presenting images, descriptions and narratives about the land survey artifacts on the Society’s website.
    • Collaborating with Alberta museums and public institutions to develop exhibits on land surveying and to display land survey artifacts.
    • Creating traveling exhibits hosted by museums and public institutions across Alberta.
    • Organizing exhibits and showcasing land survey artifacts at special events.
    • Renting out land survey artifacts for display in private offices and buildings, where they can educate and interest staff and visitors.
  2. The society conducts research into the history of land surveying in Alberta and publishes narratives and articles based on its findings. These publications contribute to a deeper understanding of the profession’s evolution and its impact on the province.
  3. The society develops stories and exhibits about land surveying in Western Canada and Alberta that align with school history and mathematics curriculums. These educational materials help students learn about the importance of land surveying in shaping Alberta’s history and development.
