Michael J. Tacon was born in Oxford, England in July 1940. He graduated from Stockport Grammar School in Stockport, Cheshire in 1956 and came to Canada the following year.

From 1962 to 1973, Mr. Tacon was involved in a private survey practice in the Kootenays. In Alberta, he articled to Bill Jones and Bill Dabbs and, on June 29, 1978, he was registered as Alberta Land Surveyor 469. He was also registered as a British Columbia Land Surveyor and a Canada Lands Surveyor.

Michael Tacon was involved in a private survey practice in Calgary until 1987 when he left the surveying profession to earn a university degree in psychology. He practiced as a psychotherapist until 2001.

His interests include hiking, bird watching, theatre, tai chi, meditation and studies in spirituality.
