Commentary:
The Theodolite is marked “Cooke, Troughton & Simms, Ltd. London & York No 167841”. It has a 6 inch horizontal circle and a 10 inch telescope.
It came with a wooden box marked “Buff and Buff Manufactoring Co. Makers of Engineering Equipment, Boston” The box was too large for the transit so foam padding was placed inside the box to protect and hold the transit firm in it.
The transit is in good condition with normal wear for an old instrument that had been used for many years. The horizontal and vertical bearings were a little stiff so WD40 was applied which made rotation much better. The number “157” was painted on the horizontal plate of the transit in large yellow letters. The number presumably indicated that the transit at one time belonged to a large survey organization such as a government department. Paint remover was applied to remove the letters. As some trace of the numbers remained, they were touched up with black paint.

Notes: The Society has only one of this model in their collection.
