Commentary:

Path Instruments Transit. Path transits were made in Japan and sold by the Hughes Owens Co. in the 1950s. Transit on a wood base used as a curling trophy. Etched on the wood oak base plate: “Survey Transit made by Path Instruments Inc. NEW YORK”. On the top of the vertical circle cover, there is the following inscription: MADE FOR THE HUGHES OWENS Co. Ltd. CANADA. The transit reads horizontal and vertical angles to the nearest of arc. The main scales read to the nearest 30 minutes of arc and the verniers the read to the nearest minute of arc. The angles are read on exterior scales. The transit has four foot screws. The Transit has a compass below the telescope. There is a screw which when turned anti-clockwise will release the compass needle so it can swing free. The transit is affixed to a wood base and was intended to be a curling trophy by UMA Engineering. The base is made up of two blocks of wood separated and held together by four short metal pillars. On each side of the lower wood block are four plaques for inscribing winners’ names.
