Commentary:
Brown wooden box with dovetail corners is 35 cm (l) X 12 (w) X 24 (h) and is in two parts. The top and bottom are held together with two small brass hinges on the back and two hook latches on the front. A chromed lid restraint is along the right side inside the box. The leather strap handle is 2.5 cm (w) X 57 cm (l) and has a metal buckle. The inside of the case is divided into three compartments. The base of the instrument sits in the middle compartment. Also included in the case is a small instruction manual, a black metal plumb bob that is 6 cm (l) X 3 cm in diameter with a nylon string 2.05 m (l) wrapped around it. On the front of the box is a scratched up label: “Starrett ATHOL, MASS. U.S.A.”
The instrument consists of chrome and black metal. It has a 10 cm diameter circle, a 32 cm X 3 cm diameter telescope with horizontal and vertical protractors, a level tube bubble, four adjustable foot screws and three short metal legs (5 cm each) for inserting into the longer metal adjustable legs.
The metal adjustable legs are 2 cm X 72 cm (l) collapsed or 132 cm (l) extended. Each leg has two thumb knurled clamps: one for holding the extension in place and the other for holding the extendable legs to the short legs attached to the instrument.
