Commentary:
Keuffel & Esser, tilting level, Serial No 91426 with wooden box.
Brass instrument, includes telescope, 360* horizontal scale, partial vertical scale reading approximately 50*, level bubble along the telescope, plate level bubble between standards, four levelling screws between level and lower plate which is threaded onto a tripod. Threads are 3 1/2″ in diameter. Most of the instrument is covered with a black wrinkle paint. The horizontal and vertical plates have clamps and tangent slow motion screws. The telescope is a variable focus and has a detachable sun shade over the objective lens.

Two piece wooden brown varnished box is 34 cm (l) X 25 cm (h) X 16 cm (d). The top portion is attached to the bottom portion by two brass hinges and the front is connected by a brass lockable flip latch. A nylon web strap is attached to the lower portion by four screws with two on either side.
There is also a small silver adjusting wrench marked “Keuffel & Esser Co NEW-YORK” inside the case.
Inside the box lid there is labelling “EYE END” “KEUFFEL & ESSER CO. NEW YORK, HOBOKEN, NJ, CHICAGO, ST . LOUIS, SAN FRANCISCO, MONTREAL, LOS ANGELES.” [a list of items sold by K & E], “No. 5155 SERIAL 91426 3 1/2 X 8 Threads”.
