At the beginning of the 20th century the 66 foot Gunters chain consisting of 100 chain like links, the length of each each being 0.66 feet (7.92 inches) was gradulally replaced by steel band tapes.
However, the chain continued as a unit of measurement with steel band tapes being gradulated in chains and links. For Dominion Lands surveys, lines were to be measured in chains and check-chained in feet. As a result, for convenience, some steel band tapes were produced that were calibrated in chains and links on one side and feet on the other.
