Commentary:
T. Cooke and Sons Ltd. Theodolite. It predates 1913 based on the labels on the theodolite box. It is purported to have been used by A.G. Stewart ALS#078. T. Cooke & Sons was founded in York, England in 1837. In 1922 it was amalgamated with the firm of Troughton & Simms of London. No.11627, T. Cooke & Sons Ltd, London & York. Four leveling screws. Comes with vertical circle and horizontal circle with compass. Inscription on the side of the transit reads “Made for the Hughes Owens Co Ltd Winnipeg”. Comes in a wooden leather covered box which includes a base plate for the bottom of the transit. There are several labels on the inside of the box. Two dates are visible “April 6th 13 and June 3.14 on one of the labels.
