Commentary:
This theodolite was made by T. Cooke and Sons Ltd. A label in the inside of the wooden carrying case says that it was made for the Hughes Owens Co. Ltd. Winnipeg. T. Cooke & Sons was founded in York, England in 1837 and in 1922 it was amalgamated with the firm of Troughton & Simms of London. The Hughes Owens Co was incorporated in Montreal in 1900.
The serial number “11627” and “T. Cooke & Sons Ltd, London & York.” Is on the theodolite and a inscription on the side of the theodolite reads “Made for the Hughes Owens Co Ltd Winnipeg”.
It comes in a wooden leather covered box which includes a base plate for the bottom of the transit. There are several labels on the inside of the box. Two dates are visible “April 6th 13 and June 3.14 on one of the labels.
It is in poor condition. Missing on horizontal tangent screw and all accessories. Glass covers for horizontal verniers are cracked, missing plastic shade for one horizontal vernier. The box is also in poor condition.
It was given to Charlie Weir by A.G. Stewart ALS#078.
