Commentary:
This theodolite was made by Bausch, Lomb, Saegmuller Co. of Rochester, NY. It comes with a stride level (ALSA 2016.01.10) which is mounted on the theodolite. Etched on a brass plate on the theodolite is “BAUSCH, LOMB. SAEGMULLER CO., ROCHESTER, N.Y. 6451.” On the telescope is a label stating EMR Inventory No: “633 024595, 6675-66-666-6666. EMR is the abbreviation for the Department of Energy Mines and Resouces, the prior name of the Department of Natural Resources
The theodolite is stored In a wooden box marked ” T.Cooke & Sons, Ltd. Markers of Astronomical, Surveying and Drawing Instruments & c…. , London , York & Cape Town.”
The theodolite appears on page 39 in the 1907 catalogue ” Astronomical & Engineering Instruments, Bausch, Lomb, Saegmuller Co. of Rochester, NY. USA ” – see the image above of page 9 showing the theodolite.
The Department of Natural Resources describes this object as an “Astro Transit”. It was used for geodtetic surveys at the beginningof the 20th century.
