Commentary:

The top of the level is engraved “Ni 2 arctic.”  Also “ZEISS OPTON Nr 144971 Germany.” Nr 144971 is probably the serial number.

The Ni 2 was introduced in 1951, although the model Ni 2 artic was probably introduced several years later. The Ni2 is reported to be the first ‘automatic’ level built in large quantities – a  Zeiss advertisement in 1970 said that the company had produced over 50,000 Ni2 levels in the past 20 years.

It was acquired by Kinloch Underwood & Associates Ltd. of Edmonton, AB through the purchase of assets and equipment from the previous survey firm, J.B. Underwood and Associates Ltd. of Edmonton, AB in 1974. It was used by Kinloch Underwood for surveying projects in Alberta.
