Commentary:
The inscription on the face of compass reads ” W. & L. E. Gurley, Troy. NY.” It is graduated to 1/2 of a degree. It has flip up sighting devices and two level bubbles. the compass needle can be locked using a screw on the underside of the compass.
The donor, Charlie Weir, believes the compass was used by A.G. Stewart ALS. After a long and adventurous survey career starting in 1908 A.G. Stewart started a private practice in Edmonton just after WW2. Charlie became a partner in the firm in in 1952.
