Commentary:

This Stanley level has a horizontal scale and three leveling screws. Inscribed on the scope of the level is “48318, STANLEY, LONDON, MADE IN ENGLAND.” Two words, one before STANLEY and one after are unreadable.  Details about the level, including the date May 1948, is stamped on a certificate pasted to the top of the inside of the box.

According to the doner of the level, Charlie Weir, it was believed to be owned by A.G. Stewart, ALS. Stewart had a remarkable history of surveying in Western Canada, including surveying on the Alaska – Canada boundary before starting a survey firm which became Stewart, Weir, Stewart, Watson, Heinrichs and Dixon in Edmonton. It was one of the best known in the profession across Canada.
