Commentary:
This steel tape is calibrated in feet and tenths of a foot throughout.
The tape is marked “TENTHS STANDARD AT 20C WITH 15 LBS PULL.” The handle is marked with the Norman Wade logo on one side and” WIND THIS WAY” on the other.
Identical looking tapes are shown in a 1951 Instruments Limited catalogue. They came in lengths of 100, 200 and 300 feet. Several other survey supply companies made similar tapes. They were very durable and were standard equipment for survey parties at the time and for many years after.
Source of Object: Donated by Al Edwards, ALS#224.
Notes: The Society has several other 100 ‘ tapes in their collection: ALSA 2017.01.02 (Moyer); a 100 foot steel tape in a cloth reel, ALSA 2008.16.03 (Murray Ingalls); and a cloth 100’ tape, ALSA 2008.10.03 (Grant Cross).
