Commentary:

This steel tape is 1/8 inches wide and 500 links long. It is graduated in links, poles, and chains. A pole is 1/4 the length of a chain or 16.6 feet.

The tape is marked “The Lufkin Rule Company of Canada, Ltd. Barrie, Ontario”. The metal reel is marked “Lufkin, Made in USA”.

1/8 inch wide tapes were lighter than wider tapes thus they enabled more accurate measurements over long unsupported distances, such as over gullies or bodies of water. However they were more likely to break,

Notes: The Society has one other tape in their collection, ALSA 2007.21.04 (Director of Surveys).
