Ed Hodge who donated the photo theodolite stated that it orginated in Florence, Italy. Before it was purchased by Ed in 1969 at an asset sale it was owned by Northwest Survey Corporation. Ed used it for the study of tar sand settlements in the Fort Mcmurray area of Alberta and for mapping (three dimensionally) old building facades in Edmonton.
The photo-topographical method of mapping a feature required reading horizontal and vertical angles and taking photographs showing the feature from at least two control points. The maps were made later in the office.
Source of Object: Donated by Ed Hodge.
