Commentary:
This theodolite is inscribed ” COOKE, TROUGHTON & SIMMS, LTD. YORK, ENGLAND. VO12509″ It is calibrated to 20 minutes of arc on its horizontal and vertical scales. The vernier reads directly to 20 seconds of arc.
A metal plaque on the inside of the wooden cattying case reads ” COOK, TROUGHTON &SIMMS LTD Manufacturers of Precision Instruments, YORK, ENGLAND.”
