The instrument appears to have two motions (horizontal and vertical) and appears to mount on a fixed peg. It has two level bubbles and they can be adjusted by screwing the three legs that are attached. There is a sighting mechanism on the side.
The wooden box is in two parts and is hinged at the back with two 4 cm brass hinges and latched at the front with two small brass 4 cm swivel latches. The dimension of the closed box is 25.5 cm (l) X 14 cm (w) X 16 cm (h) and it has a 60 cm woven strap that is attached to the box at either end by two screws (each end). The inside of the box has felt covered blocks for holding the instrument in place.
The instruction folded sheets (28 cm X 22 cm) comprise of four sheets (pages 1 to 7) and entitled “Using the Astro-compass to Study Solar Access”. It describes the set up and adjustments to make the instrument give the results needed.
