The orange  case is comprised of  two pieces of molded plastic, 34 cm (l) X 20 cm (w) X 29 (h) and is hinged on the bottom by a steel rod going through plastic hinges that are molded into the case. The top of the case has a split plastic handle that is molded into the case; there are  two black plastic clips that clamp the two sides of the case together when it is closed. Under the handle (on the top of the case) is a metal label which reads “DI1600”. Both sides of the case have the words “WILD LEITZ” imprinted into the case. The inside of the case has molded black foam inserts (in both halves) to hold the instrument and accessories in place.

The instrument is light green in color with black accents and is comprised of an EDM with a counterbalance attached below it. The EDM is 18 cm (l) X 7 cm (h) (including the aiming sight) X 5.5 cm (w); the total height including the counter weight is 17 cm. The rear of the instrument has a small screen over two squeeze clips for  affixing the instrument to a theodolite. The front has two lenses for sending and receiving the signal, the right side has a plug in port for a data collector and the left side has black lettering “DISTOMAT WILD DI1600 MADE IN SWITZERLAND”. The top of the instrument has a black peep sight, four press buttons (with descriptors for operating the instrument) and raised lettering “WILD HEERBRUGG”. The bottom has a black plate that encompasses a power connector and clips to secure the instrument to a theodolite. The serial number is denoted within this plate and denoted as “80792”. The counterbalance is also light green in color and is attached to the bottom of the EDM.
