Commentary:
The instrument consists of two separate parts. One part is a 20 cm arm about 6 mm square with a 2.5 cm diameter X 2 cm (l) weight (with pin in bottom) at one end and a 2 cm peg that inserts into the main device, at the other end. The main device consists of a 24 cm silver bar which has, on one end, a tracing pin for following lines and a finger grip tab. Along the bar is a black sliding attachment with various wheels and numeric gauges to determine areas of closed figures. The silver bar has a scale along it divided into 0.05 mm increments and is numbered from “5” through to “35”. The side of the black sliding attachment has “ALPHA T.H.S. CO. No. 220 No. 19699” inscribed into it.
Blond wooden case, 26 cm (l) X 8.5 cm (w) X 5 cm (h), in two pieces. Top and bottom pieces are held together, at the back, by two small chromed hinges and, at the front, by a small fancy clasp. The case is lined, top and bottom, with a purple velvet material with compartments in the bottom for securing the instrument. On the top of the case, scratched into the varnished surface, is the following “Jasper Yellowhead” and “#19699”. There is also a number “10152-04” imprinted in the varnish. The case also has: 1) a small flat bar (10 cm (l) X 1.1 cm (w) X 1 mm thick with a tiny anchor pin), and is inscribed “ALPHA T.H.S. CO.” and has 0, 1″, 2″, and 3″ inscribed along it. 2) a small 9 cm x 5 cm sheet showing conversion numbers for the operation of the planimeter.
