Commentary:
The basic equipment has two main parts. One part is the weighted arm that fits into the main mechanical device used to trace lines for determining the area of a closed figure. The main device consists of a bar which has on one end a tracing pin (for following lines) and finger grip. Along the bar is a sliding instrument that has various wheels and numeric gauges to determine areas of closed figures. The case also houses: a small flat bar (10 cm (l) X 1.1 cm (w) X 1.5 mm thick), a small finger screw driver approximately 1.8 cm X 1.7 cm X 1 mm thick, a black oval fold out magnifying glass approximately 4 cm X 3 cm X 8 mm thick, various small hand-written sheets providing formulas, scales and instructions for determining areas and a small extra adjusting screw.
The black wooden case (in two parts) is approximately 25 cm (l) X 9 cm (w) and 4.5 cm (h) and is covered with a lacquered cloth material. Two folding latches are on the front and two hinges are on the back of this case. Inside the case are slots for holding the devices and accessories in place. The top and bottom of the case is lined with a purple velvet material. Inside the top is an ivory-looking label inscribed with “The Hughes Owens Co., Ltd. MONTREAL WINNIPEG TORONTO OTTAWA VANCOUVER”.
