The planimeter comprises of a weighted arm and the tracing arm which fits into the tracing arm.. The tracing arm is used to trace the boundary line of the closed figure to determine its area. The tracing arm is inscribed with a scale, and the number 10990 which is presumably the serial number.

The top and bottom of the case is lined with a purple velvet material. Inside the top is an ivory-colored label inscribed with “The Hughes Owens Co., Ltd. MONTREAL WINNIPEG TORONTO OTTAWA VANCOUVER”.

This planimeter, previously owned by Brown Okamura & Associates Ltd. In Lethbridge, Alberta, was used to compute cross section areas from engineering drawings to obtain earthwork volumes.
