Commentary:
The Topcon website states that the GTS-1 (Guppy) was released in April 1980 – it was the first model of a theodolite that incorporated the electronic distance meter and was the first of a series which included the GTS-1, GTS-10, and GTS-10D. The name Guppy was probably because it incorporated a theodolite and an EDM in one comparatively smaller lighter instrument.
The face of the GTS-10D is labeled “TOPCON GUPPY GTS-10D TOKYO OPTICAL CO., LTD. JAPAN.” A label on the botton section of the instrument reads “TOPCON B11537 MADE IN JAPAN.” B11637.is likely the serial number.
